Nokia at the ESPYs – Grab amazing Dave Kinsey artwork

ESPN, the worldwide leader in sports broadcasting, hosted ESPY awards a few weeks ago. The ESPYs is ESPNs annual award show that celebrates the achievements and accolades of athletes from all areas of sport. Nokia was at the ESPYs, hosting parties and athletes and showing off the Nokia Lumia 900.
As a part of the festivities, Nokia teamed up with artist Dave Kinsey to create custom artwork for the athletes. The good news for all of us is that we get to share in the awesomeness of his amazing artwork as Nokia has made the artwork available to download.

For those unfamiliar with him, Dave Kinsey is a world-renowned graphical artist whose work you’ve seen on many logos and album art covers.

As a part of the Nokia Pre-Party which was attended by athletes, influencers and celebrities, Dave Kinsey created more than 80 pieces of art which were available as wallpapers for the Nokia Lumia 900.

Athletes such as Donald Driver, Evan Longoria and Mike Miller received Lumia 900s with custom artwork for their phones.

If you’re looking for a sports-inspired background for your Nokia phone, be sure to grab the ZIP file of all the images – there are 11 in total.

Each piece was created by Dave Kinsey and will look stunning on your phone or computer.

Getting podcasts on your Nokia Lumia

Until you’ve actually done it, it might not be entirely obvious that your Nokia Lumia has a fully-functional, built-in podcast player that does a great job of playing episodes, keeping your podcasts up-to-date and also getting rid of content that’s out-of-date.
You’ll find your podcasts under the ‘Music + Videos’ tile. But of course, you’ll have to subscribe to some before you can join the fun.

Podcasts using Zune

The key to using it on a Windows PC is Microsoft Zune. You may already have set up Zune to synchronise a playlist of your favourite tunes. What you may not have realised is that you set up podcasts separately from regular playlists.

When you go to the podcast section in Zune, you can see what you’re already subscribed to, and also add a new subscription. To do, this you will need the feed address of the podcast, also described as its RSS. Click ‘add a new podcast’ at the bottom of the screen and enter the address in the box that appears.

For each podcast, you can determine how many episodes you want to keep in your collection. For a daily news bulletin, there’s not much point keeping more than one or two episodes. However, for ‘feature content’ such as Melvyn Bragg’s In our time, you may want to keep everything until you have the luxury of a long train journey in order to catch up.

More than PC-based

Got a Mac rather than a PC? The same function can also be performed using the Windows Phone 7 Connector for Mac. Here you can set your device to synchronise whatever podcasts you subscribe to in iTunes, or just a selection, and once again choose how many or only to transfer unlistened items in your library.

No Windows PC or Mac, or don’t want to have to synchronise regularly?

You’ll need an app, then. A good start here would be SimpliRSS, a free app that can download and play podcasts directly on your Lumia phone. All you’ll need is the address of the RSS feed for the podcast.

If you’re prepared to invest a small amount of money into getting a dedicated podcast app, then BringCast will fit the bill, offering an audio-dedicated interface and a directory of popular content to get you started.

Lastly, for a more limited, but extremely easy-to-use and attractive podcast player, we recommend the BBC Podcast Lounge app. Obviously, you only get the BBC’s audio output, but with more than 350 varied and professionally produced programmes to choose from, that’s not so limited at all.

If you’re going down the apps route, then be safe rather than sorry. Make sure you aren’t burning up your 3G data allowance with podcast downloads – only download content when you’re on WiFi.

Weather Channel app for Lumia gets a major redesign and new features

We’re happy to announce a new version of The Weather Channel app only for your Nokia Lumia with a re-vamped look and feel, unique social weather tie-ins with the People Hub and some other really cool features.
All weather apps can provide weather data such as temperature, current conditions and a forecast for the coming days. The new Weather Channel app does this extremely well, in fact, the entire application has been re-designed to bring the most important data up front to the app user. However, it’s the new social features that set this weather app apart.

First, let’s look at My Friends Weather – Import your top 5 Facebook friends and see how weather is affecting your friends and family. Is a storm headed towards your mom? Text, email or call her right from the app. Ready to waterski at your best friend’s lake house? Know the weather before they do and invite yourself for a visit.

Social Weather Alerts – if there is a breaking weather event for your social network, you’ll be the first to know about it. It’s nice to know when something adverse is headed your friends’ way!

Sometimes you want to know when the perfect weather conditions are coming up. Perhaps you want to host a garage sale and want temps in the 70’s with no chance of rain, to sell all your stuff. Amazing Day Alerts will give you a personalized heads-up when the weather is ideal for your favorite activity.

Have an amazing weather moment to share? Whip out your phone and capture a panoramic image of a storm cloud or other weather event and your photo might be seen on The Weather Channel or on Weather.com. To see other image captures, go to iwitness.weather.com and view the gallery

In addition, the app continues global Live Tile support, get expert forecast details, national weather and storm watch updates from your favorite cities right on your start screen.

Check out the new Nokia Lumia 900All about our biggest, thinnest smartphone.Soon available worldwide
Plus, don’t forget to check out the cool Augmented Reality feature.  See the weather in a new way. Simply hold up your phone camera and scan the horizon for current, user-submitted photos posted from the same direction in which you are looking.

The Weather Channel has designed their app for Nokia Lumia phones to be a premier source for weather data and with social integration, you can take you weather experience to a whole new level! Only on Nokia Lumia! Download the updated version from your Lumia phone in Marketplace today.

Tips for recording concerts on your Nokia 808 PureView

Last week I provided definitive proof that the Nokia 808 PureView is fairly idiot-proof when it comes to taking great photos.
It’s a great camera phone because it is so easy for a novice photographer, such as myself, to use but its different settings also allow more advanced users to get the results they want as well.
We have previously published some tips and tricks to help people make the most of 808 PureView’s camera.  You can still read Parts 1 and Part 2 of our help guide.
Nokia 808 PureView

Video recording

As well as pin-sharp still images, it is worth remembering that the 808 PureView is also a very special device for recording HD video. When you combine this with its Rich Recording technology, it is not a huge leap forward to conclude that the 808 PureView will be quite something for recording music performances.
One person who has noticed this is EasycapExpertii, an 808 PureView enthusiast from Finland who has set up a websitededicated to showcasing music recordings made with the device.
Considering the 808 PureView has only been available for a few months, or even a few weeks in some places, the website already has concert videos featuring the likes of Bruce Springsteen, Madonna, Foo Fighters and many other big name acts.

An expert’s tips

EasycapExpertii has shared several tips with Nokia Conversations so that you can also make great recordings with your 808 PureView.
  • Be careful that you are not covering the microphone with your hands. The 808 PureView has two mics for stereo recording – one at the top and the other at the bottom of the phone (as you hold it vertically).
  • Use a tripod or a handheld stabiliser wherever possible. For a tripod mount and other accessories for the 808 PureView see thisConversations post.
  • If you are moving around, do not try to change focus! Wait until you have come to stop and then adjust the focus for the best results.
  • If you are recording at a concert, try to stay within 50m of the stage. Beyond this distance the audio will be fine, but the video will suffer because of the lighting, or lack of it.
  •  If the performer is standing underneath a spotlight, use the Spotlight scene mode on the 808 PureView. This setting is designed for great contrasts where someone is standing underneath a bright light or in front of a dark background.

Nokia Siemens Networks supports Optus network modernization and 4G implementation

To modernize Optus’ mobile network including refarming the 900 MHz GSM frequency band to improve UMTS 3G coverage

To implement Evolved Packet Core and rollout parts of 4G LTE 1800 MHz radio access network

Optus, one of the leading mobile operators in Australia, has selected Nokia Siemens Networks as a partner for its key network initiatives. The agreement includes modernization of the mobile network, refarming the 900 MHz GSM frequency band, and providing infrastructure and services for LTE* (4G) rollout in Sydney and Perth. In addition, as part of this agreement, Nokia Siemens Networks is the sole LTE core provider for Optus.

“Spectrum is a scarce resource, so operators are seeking ways to make the best use of it. With this deal, Optus will re-use its existing spectrum to modernize its radio network and also offer 4G services cost-efficiently in one of the largest spectrum migration programs globally,” said Stephen McFeeley, head of Australia and New Zealand at Nokia Siemens Networks. “Our mobile broadband offering, based on the Liquid Core and Liquid Radio architectures, will assist Optus in managing the dynamic capacity and technology demands in one of the most advanced mobile broadband markets.”

“Our major mobile network initiatives, including network enhancements, U900 MHz spectrum migration program and 4G services rollout aim to provide the best possible experience for our customers,” added G√ľnther Ottendorfer, Managing Director, Networks at Optus. “Nokia Siemens Networks is a key network partner in supporting these initiatives.”

Nokia Siemens Networks is upgrading the Optus mobile network and deploying 4G using its Single RAN (radio access network)** platform, based on its compact, energy-efficient Flexi Multiradio Base Station. The company is also providing its Evolved Packet Core platform including Flexi NS (Network Server) and Flexi NG (Network Gateway). Optus’ LTE, GSM and 3G networks will be monitored, managed and optimized by Nokia Siemens Networks’ unified network management system, NetAct.

In addition to Optus’ in-house services capability, Nokia Siemens Networks will provide Optus with a range of services, including network implementation, spectrum refarming, radio planning, optimization, project management, and care including spare part management, software maintenance, third-party software support and training. Some of these services will be delivered remotely through Nokia Siemens Networks' Global Delivery Centers. Nokia Siemens Networks will also implement its In Building Solution (IBS) that enables reliable mobile broadband connectivity by significantly improving network capacity and coverage inside buildings.

The company will provide reliable and secure 4G services over the network through its radio transport security solution. Nokia Siemens Networks will also provide network operations support to improve Optus' network efficiency and quality.

TeliaSonera International Carrier deploys new optical network to deliver 100G+ speed

World’s leading fiber-based telecom service provider selects Nokia Siemens Networks for the 100G+ pan European network to handle future IP traffic growth

TeliaSonera International Carrier customers can now enjoy a significant increase in network capacity. The carrier has deployed a new overlay network across Europe to address the tremendous growth in data traffic. Nokia Siemens Networks has built this new network to deliver speeds of 100G and beyond. The existing optical network for theoperator was also provided by the vendor.

“The increased adoption of bandwidth-hungry applications requires capacity upgrades,” said Mattias Fridstr√∂m, vice president, head of technology, TeliaSonera International Carrier. “We share a long-standing relationship with Nokia Siemens Networks and are very satisfied with its installed base in 10G and 40G wavelengths across the European segment of our global network. Its leading technology for high capacity networks is exactly what we required for this major transition in our network.”

“TeliaSonera International Carrier is a market leader with its networks across North America, Europe and Russia. Maintaining that position requires greater network capacity to ensure the best end-user experience,” added Mikko Lavanti, head of optical networks customer sales and support at Nokia Siemens Networks. “The new overlay network with our latest technology is fully integrated with Juniper routers to offer a seamless service portfolio to TeliaSonera’s subscribers. It will initially have 40 and 100GE (gigabit Ethernet) capacity with the potential to be upgraded to 400G and beyond.”

Under this contract, Nokia Siemens Networks has deployed a new 100G DWDM (Dense Wave Division Multiplexing) network based on its hiT7300* platform that is operating with coherent CP-QPSK** technology. By offering DCM-free transmission, this solution enables lower latency and allows a rapid, cost effective transition to 100G line speeds. The CP-QPSK modulation format is also used for TeliaSonera’s existing network to improve performance. Nokia Siemens Networks also provides a full set of care services including software maintenance, help desk as well as spare part management services.

TeliaSonera was honored with “The Best Next Generation Global Optical Service Provider” award at the 14th WDM and Optical networking Conference in Monaco, June this year.

Yahoo! Premieres IntoNow 3.0: Accelerating Second Screen Experiences

Debuts Innovative and Fun Ways to Get More from the TV Exclusively on iPhone, iPad and iPod touch

Yahoo! (NASDAQ:YHOO), the technology powered media company, unveiled the next evolution of IntoNow from Yahoo! that delivers a more innovative and engaging way for people to capture, communicate and discover television content. In an era where 80 percent of people watching TV now have mobile or tablet devices in-hand, IntoNow 3.0 gives fans entirely new ways to share moments on TV, learn more about what they're watching and engage with friends, social networks and the broader IntoNow community.

"iOS devices are pervasive in our living rooms, and second screen behavior is now commonplace. IntoNow wanted to up the ante and give people a whole new experience," said Adam Cahan, founder of IntoNow and vice president of Product, Yahoo!. "We're the first to offer some major technological innovations — like the ability to capture and share moments that happened seconds ago on TV or automatically identify songs playing in the background — all of which gives people watching TV with IntoNow 3.0 a unique, interactive experience."

IntoNow 3.0 from Yahoo! has been rebuilt and re-designed around three new features:

TV and Music Sync: Taps into what people are watching to surface the most relevant content, including personalities, sports teams, songs, polls, or trivia, as it's happening on TV. Music Sync is the first technology to automatically identify "what's that song?" playing during a show — whether a live performance, featured song or even background music. Songs surfaced by Music Sync can be one-click purchased through iTunes or people can view the music video on YouTube.
CapIt: Delivers industry-first technology that gives people the ability to capture and caption "did you see that?" TV moments like a breaking news story, a red carpet dazzler or even a funny scene. Simply tap a button and this iOS exclusive app will instantly synchronize and deliver still images of the program that is shown on TV. People can then select the image they want, add a caption, and share with friends on Facebook, Twitter or IntoNow.
Group Chat: Instantly create private conversations with friends within the IntoNow app, form groups for a particular TV event; or set-up a recurring conversation to talk about favorite shows as the season progresses.
IntoNow 3.0 uses patented SoundPrint technology to automatically identify live or previously aired television content spanning more than 2.7 million airings. Over 160 U.S. TV channels are currently being indexed live, creating a rich database to build video discovery and programming experiences.

The IntoNow 3.0 App is available for free from the App Store on iPhone, iPad and iPod touch or at www.iTunes.com/appstore/.

On Android 4.1 Jelly Bean

Hello everyone,
A quick note – during a Q&A session last week on our Sony Mobile GB Facebook page, a local spokesperson gave information out in error on our Android 4.1 Jelly Bean software development and rollout for 2011 Xperia smartphones.
We are actively investigating Android OS upgrades for all devices, but in the meantime, our Ice Cream Sandwich rollout for Xperia S and 2011 Xperia smartphones continues as planned.
As always, feel free to drop a question below and keep your eyes fixed on the blog, as we’ll be bringing you more on our Ice Cream Sandwich rollout for Xperia P and other 2012 Xperia smartphones over the next couple of weeks.

Apple Stocks Up on Components for September iPhone Launch

Apple hasn’t yet officially announced the fall event at which it is expected to debut the next iteration of the iPhone, but it’s definitely planning one.
IMore was first to report that the company has scheduled a special event for September 12, and now we’ve confirmed it as well. Sources tell AllThingsD that Apple is currently planning an event for the week of September 9th, with Wednesday being the date on which it will likely be held. And while we haven’t yet confirmed the event’s focus, history suggests it will indeed be the new iPhone.
One thing’s for certain, though: Apple is ramping up for a big fall product cycle. And to see that, you need only look at the recent spike in the company’s prepayment for inventory components.

According to Apple’s latest 10-Q filing, prepayment for inventory components rose $1.15 billion sequentially in the June quarter. That’s a big increase, one that puts such prepayments at their highest level in four years — 12.6 percent of Apple’s total sales, according to Wells Fargo Securities analyst Maynard Um. And as Um notes, they’re a good indicator that Apple is ramping up for a big product launch — or several of them.
“Historically, such increases have been followed by a solid ramp-up in revenue in the following 2-3 quarters,” Um said in a Monday note to clients. “In our view, an increase in inventory component prepayment may suggest that Apple is securing supply for potential new product launches.”

Apple gears up for September 12 event, stokes iPhone talk

Apple Inc is gearing up to unveil a new product at a major September 12 event, a source familiar with the plan said, presaging the long-awaited launch of the redesigned iPhone.

The world's most valuable technology company typically takes the wraps off its latest smartphones around the fall, allowing the gadget to hit store shelves in time for the peak holiday shopping season.

The fifth iteration of the device that helped revolutionize the mobile industry is expected to sport a thinner, larger screen and a smaller dock connector, among other tweaks, sources and analysts have said.

The company on Monday declined to comment.

Apple's iPhone launches are among the biggest affairs on Silicon Valley's calendar, scrutinized by technology investors, enthusiasts and consumers alike.

The September 12 date may shift, the source said on condition of anonymity.

Samsung Electronics launched its latest Galaxy device in recent months, stealing a march on Apple in an intensifying battle for mobile supremacy. The pair now command more than half of global smartphone sales.

Technology blog iMore first reported the debut of the new iPhone at a September 12 event earlier on Monday.

White Galaxy Nexus will look like this

As expected, the real white Galaxy Nexus is simply a white housing with a white back battery and not the fully white render of ours that the tech world spread seemingly everywhere yesterday. As someone that owns the white Nexus S, this is exactly how I envisioned the device to look, and man does it looks pretty. Samsung going with the all black front as to not disrupt the beautiful infinity look

White Galaxy Nexus Hitting The UK Next Month

Digging white devices lately? Yeah, for some crazy reason, so am I. It’s always nice to shy away from the everyday black slate once in a while and it looks like the trend is still catching on. The Galaxy S II overseas and in the states went white not too long ago and now it looks like the Galaxy Nexus will be following suit around February. Next month we’ll see a few different carriers

Sprint’s first LTE device could be the Galaxy Nexus with a 1.5GHz processor

You have to love when ads leak. This one is from Sprint and it shows off the Galaxy Nexus as their first 4G LTE phone. It showed up on the CNET website shortly after Dan Hesse tweeted that Atlanta, Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio would be the first LTE markets for Sprint by mid-year.

There’s another twist though. One of the ads clearly states that it has a 1.5GHz dual-core processor. If
